An 8-week introductory course in Hatha yoga in the Svaroopa® style

A style of Hatha yoga, Svaroopa® offers profound relief for back and neck pain, sciatica, headaches, and more. Classes are non-athletic (no sweating or straining). You will leave class feeling physically restored, mentally relaxed, and emotionally renewed. Instruction includes personal modifications that allow each student get the deepest experience possible.

This eight week course is designed for (but not limited to) the newcomer to yoga. Maybe you've tried a class or two, dabbled in this style or that, but felt ill-equipped to continue class or have not gotten what you needed. Perhaps you've never tried yoga, but always wanted to -- or have been advised to by a professional. Now is a great time to start doing yoga.

Each class will focus on a specific topic (below) and include guided meditations and poses. These sessions are designed to lead you further down a yogic path to more advanced classes and/or your own personal daily practice.

Week 1

Concepts of Bliss

The sanskrit word Svaroopa means "the bliss of your own being". Yoga can be used to reach that bliss. In this class we will talk briefly about these ideas and put them into practice using poses that release the core tensions that hold us back from our bliss.

Week 2

Focus on the Breath

Learn how to use yoga's Ocean Sounding Breath (Ujayii Pranayama) to access deep layers of relaxation and release. The breath is a great tool for reducing stress, calming the mind and creating clarity and focus.

Week 3

Blanket Folding 101

In each class we use no fewer than 5 blankets per person to offer the support needed to encourage release. Using the proper support and alignment can encourage the body to heal through the release of muscle tension. Today we practice blanket folding!

Week 4

Support = Release

Further examining the use of blankets in this restorative style of yoga, this class will focus on how to be sure you are receiving proper support in your practice. We will stress the idea that yoga should not hurt or strain.

Week 5

Tailbone, Sacrum, Waist & Ribs

We release the entire spine in all of our classes by moving upward from the tailbone. In this class we will take time to notice these areas of our bodies and discuss what is moving and shifting for us.

Week 6

Noticing the Changes

We will talk in each class about what we notice through our yoga practice. In this class we will delve a bit more deeply into our experiences.

WEek 7

Processing the Experience

Release can come in many forms, physical, emotional, spiritual. Allowing yourself to heal through yoga can be a process. We will talk about ways to stave off relapse and maintain the balance yoga can provide.

Week 8

Daily Practice or something like it!

Our last class will offer options for continuing your yoga practice including classes with Shivani or Bucky and tools to begin your own home practice.

Please Note

Practicing students of other styles of yoga and more advanced yogis will also benefit from this course. By taking the opportunity to slow down and focus on the healing inward journey that a restorative style of yoga like Svaroopa can provide, you may find more peace and stillness, strength and balance in your regular practice.

Continuing Svaroopis are welcome, remembering this class will go more slowly than you may be accustomed to with Bucky and Shivani. You will be given space to practice and refine core poses and tools used in our practice.
